Internal Skimmers

What does a protein skimmer do? A protein skimmer is a saltwater aquarium filter that replicates the ocean’s natural filtration. Ocean waves produce foam that attracts organics, which are then deposited on shore. A protein skimmer creates foam in a chamber that attracts waste as it rises out of the water into a collection cup for removal. A protein skimmer is the central piece of a saltwater aquarium setup.

An internal skimmer sits inside the water. An in-sump protein skimmer, the most popular skimmer style, sits inside the aquarium sump under the main tank. An in-tank protein skimmer, like the Tunze 9004 skimmer, mounts inside the display tank. An internal protein skimmer has two main benefits: ease of setup and no leaks.

Looking for the best in sump protein skimmer for reef tank? Choose a cone skimmer with a bubble plate and a DC pump for power and control.
